SUPPORT
THE TROOPS
Life on the Ground
Whether the
President received “bad intelligence”, or the
intelligence was “cooked” to build a case for a policy decision already
made,
the facts on-the-ground for the troops were the same. They were
inserted into a
violent, chaotic environment in which organized, armed resistance to
their
presence continues to the present day. Long, multiple tours of
duty mean
prolonged exposure to the steady violence.
Many Marine and Army combat units are on their fourth, or even fifth,
year-long tour of duty. The
Pentagon’s “stop-loss” policy of
involuntary extensions of soldiers' tours of duty (aka “the back-door
draft”)
has added further to the troops' hardship.
