ZAPATERIA (SHOE STORE):
I was on the roof of a pension looking out at the colonial silver mining city of Taxco when I looked down and saw this juvenile drama unfolding in the street outside the shoe store below.
This is the image that inspired the title of the show, “Corazon.”It was shot on the street in the San Angel district of Mexico City and truly reflects “the heart of Latin America.”
TARJETAS SANTOS (HOLY CARDS):
This street vendor is selling holy cards, mostly to older women going into and coming out of the church behind him. He sets up in the morning before the early Masses and spreads the cards out as you see them. He boasted to me that no one ever steals the cards because “God would punish them and they know it.”
We stopped at a Sunday rodeo outside a small town in Mexico state, which is west of Mexico City in the mountains. There were the usual rodeo events being held in a makeshift arena set up with several rows of bleachers around it. Inside and outside the arena people from around the area were dressed in formal hacienda attire. This guy’s hat, monogrammed holster, chaps and carefully coiled lariat caught my eye.
